Euflexxa Injections Sydney

Euflexxa injections are used to help relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis, most commonly osteoarthritis of the knee. Osteoarthritis, sometimes referred to as arthritis or degenerative joint disease, can cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced movement. Euflexxa is a type of hyaluronic acid injection. It is injected into the affected joint to help supplement the natural fluid within the joint, which may assist with lubrication, cushioning and symptom relief in suitable patients.

At Harbour Radiology, Euflexxa injections are performed under image guidance by our experienced radiologists.

CT-Guided Euflexxa Injections at Harbour Radiology

Our specialty-trained radiologists have extensive experience performing image-guided musculoskeletal injections for patients with joint pain, osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Euflexxa is most commonly used for knee osteoarthritis, also known as knee arthritis. It may be considered for patients who have ongoing knee pain, stiffness or reduced mobility and who have not achieved sufficient relief from conservative treatment. Before commencing treatment, patients usually require prior imaging to confirm osteoarthritis. This may include an X-ray, CT scan or other diagnostic imaging, depending on your symptoms and your referring doctor’s advice.

At Harbour Radiology, Euflexxa injections are performed using image guidance to help the radiologist accurately place the injection into the affected joint.

Common Uses for Euflexxa Injections

Euflexxa injections are most commonly used for osteoarthritis-related knee pain. Knee osteoarthritis may cause discomfort during walking, standing, climbing stairs, exercise or everyday activity.

Euflexxa may be considered for patients with:

  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Knee arthritis pain
  • Degenerative joint disease of the knee
  • Joint stiffness related to osteoarthritis
  • Reduced mobility caused by osteoarthritis-related pain
  • Osteoarthritis confirmed on diagnostic imaging

In some cases, Euflexxa may also be discussed for osteoarthritis-related pain in other synovial joints, such as the hip, shoulder or elbow. Suitability depends on your diagnosis, imaging findings, symptoms and referring doctor’s advice.

The strongest clinical use and product positioning is for knee osteoarthritis. Harbour’s internal treatment information identifies the knee as the predominant use, while also noting that other synovial joints may be considered where clinically appropriate.

Treatment Course and Referral Requirements

Euflexxa is usually given as a course of three injections. The standard treatment schedule is:

  • One injection per week
  • Three injections in total
  • The full course completed over three weeks

Patients generally require a referral for each injection appointment. Your GP or specialist will advise whether Euflexxa is suitable and provide the required referrals before treatment commences.

If you have not had recent diagnostic imaging, your GP may refer you for imaging before your Euflexxa treatment course begins. This allows osteoarthritis to be confirmed and helps the radiologist plan the procedure.

What Is Involved With Euflexxa Injections?

Before the injection, the radiologist will review your referral and relevant imaging. You will also have the opportunity to discuss the procedure before it begins.

During the procedure, you will be positioned so the affected joint can be accessed safely. The skin will be cleaned, and imaging guidance will be used to identify the correct injection site. A needle is then guided into the affected joint and Euflexxa is injected into the joint space.

The procedure itself is usually quick, although you should allow additional time for preparation, consent, positioning and post-procedure instructions. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact our friendly customer service.

After each injection, you will receive instructions from the radiology team. Most patients can leave shortly after the procedure.

For the first 48 hours after your injection, you may be advised to avoid strenuous activity. This may include running, tennis, hiking, jumping, swimming, heavy lifting, jogging, cycling or aerobic exercise.
